Saturday summary

So who enjoyed last night’s football then?

In the day’s earlier game, the Dutchlings pulled off a great result against Brazil, running out 2-1 winners after second half goals from former Arsenal transfer target Felipe Melo, scoring at the wrong end, and Wesley Sneijder’s header. Sneijder has to be the smallest man on the field and it was slack defending from Brazil. Gotta feel a little bit sorry for the Brazilians, given the expectations they were bringing to the tournament, but I’m pleased for Robin and his less cunty team mates (except the Sloth-from-the-Goonies-lookalike Dirk Kuyt).

I thought the Dutch deserved it, especially after the sending off of Melo for moronic triple foul, culminating in a horrible stamp on Arjen Robben (not that that cunt doesn’t deserve it). Brazil could’ve – maybe should’ve – been down to ten men already, immediately before the goal, after Bastos (I think) tripped Robben in what would most likely have been a yellow card had he not already been carded.

The game was scary though, at least from a RvP point of view. It was sly, niggly, and there was little flowing play, and all through the game I was worried some cunt was going to chop Robin down and break him. Mrs Tom was saying that Robin just needs to toughen up – that perhaps some bionic legs would help (like that cat). I suggested to her that bionic legs perhaps weren’t the best thing for a top-level footballer, but as she pointed out with impeccable logic, since none of them have them, how could I possibly know? The pitch was shocking too. It looked to be made mostly of sand. And speaking of fouls, how satisfying was it to see Dani Alves reaction to Robben’s “gamesmanship”? Fuck you, Alves, you horrible little cunt. God knows how it only finished 10 v 11 though, and it’s unbelievable that Mark Van Bommel didn’t even pick up a yellow card.

As for the second game, what can you say about it? I only saw the second half, but it was an unbelievable climax to the match, with a last minute penalty for the most cynical of handballs by Suarez on the line, for which he was rightly sent off. Up stepped Gyan to take the spot kick, with the very last kick of the game at the end of extra time, and the poor lad sent it off the bar. Penalties beckoned, and fair play to Gyan, he stepped up and took the first Ghanian kick and smashed in an unstoppable shot in the top corner with which the keeper had no chance. That was as good as it got though, with a couple of shockingly bad spot kicks from either side, before Abreu stepped up and very cooly chipped in to send Uruguay through.

Massive respect for forumer NEN, by the way, who called Abreu’s chip before the shootout started. Awesome call.

You have to say it was unfair on the Ghanians, and it’s hardly within the spirit of the game that Suarez’s blatant cheating has probably resulted in Uruguay’s progression to the semi-finals, but that’s the way it goes, and you have to say, given the final result, it was probably the “right” thing to do. His celebrations after he saw the last minute penalty hit the bar were unseemly, and it seems unjust that he’ll just be banned for one game, but…them’s the rules. He took a bullet for his team, and his team made it through. Perhaps justice will be done against the Dutch in the semi-final.

In today’s games, the Argies play Germany in what should be a cracking match, and then Spain vs Paraguay later on, in which hopefully Cesc will be involved.

There’s no real Arsenal news today, save for the new-but-old cunt in charge at Barcelona coming out with some bullshit about how they won’t be made to pay over the odds for Cesc. I’m glad to hear it, frankly. I don’t particularly want them to pay over the odds either – just what he’s worth.

That’s your lot. Here’s to a 5-5 thriller in both of today’s World Cup games.
