Bank holiday Monday here in Ireland but Arseblog never rests for things as trivial as bank holidays, birthdays, Christmas or sideways rain.
Frankly I might as well have stayed in bed this morning as there’s so little going on, rather a surprise this close to the start of the new season. One of the things that everyone seems to be talking about is the spirit of the players and Arsene Wenger has said there’s ‘great solidarity’ in the squad. It might sound clichéd to talk about it so much but the importance of having a group of players who are willing to run that extra couple of metres for each other can’t be underestimated.
Can we read between the lines and suggest that the departures of Henry and Ljungberg has stripped the squad of two of its most, erm, individualistic players? Funny hats and scowls are no longer a part of the Arsenal make up. And with the spirit so good it does mean the boss has to bring in players who will fit into that, who are happy to become part of it and not anyone whose attitude or expectations might cause problems. I think if Nicolas Anelka was a normal man who you could rely on not to behave like a spoilt child then we might have shown more interest in him but he’s the kind of guy who can cause problems wherever he goes. Anyway, that’s a problem for the boss to solve.
I suppose at some stage I have to do a season preview before Saturday so I’ll try and get my head around that in the next couple of days.
Watched the Community Shield yesterday. Was sorry. They’re always dull games, even if the Arsenal are playing. Still, it was a chance to look at the opposition. Chelsea without Drogba and Shevchenko looked a bit short, literally, up front, while the money United spent on Nani might have been better spent on someone who can run with a ball and not fall over. Penalties. Pfff. With John Terry out for a month then it could be a good chance for some teams to find weaknesses in a defence that contains Glen Johnson and that Ben Haim bloke.
That’s really it in terms of Arsenal news. With regard to the site I’m delighted to welcome a new sponsor on board. Well, an old sponsor but doing a new thing.
