Saturday round-up: first pre-season friendly and such

You know how you know it’s a quiet day? You wake up, and all the stories on NewsNow are about Jose Mourinho ‘taunting’ Arsenal over Cesc Fabregas.

What a load of old nonsense and I’m not inclined in the slightest to read it, think about it, or have my day in any way impacted by that man. I think we know from past experience that Mourinho and truth go together like toothpaste and orange juice, so what’s the point in getting stressed about it?

There’s a long season ahead, no doubt we’ll have many legitimate grievances – some of which will include this person whose veneer of infallibility has been well and truly shattered over the last few years – but for now:

trolls

It’s like people being upset that Brendan Rodgers (who looks like the main character from Shark Tale with those new choppers of his), saying that Alexis Sanchez only chose Arsenal because of geography. Frankly, who gives a shit? He could have chosen us because he was told of a cracking Chilean restaurant on Upper Street for all I care. The fact is he’s an Arsenal player and that’s all that matters.

Anyway, aside from all that there’s some actual pre-season football today as we take on Boreham Wood in Borehamwood. They’re opening a new stand and we’ll be playing in our new away kit so it’s all going to be very exciting indeed. Those expected to turn out include Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey, Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs, Tomas Rosicky, Abou Diaby, Yaya Sanogo and our only goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny.

It looks as if there are some tickets available (according to the official site), so if you’re in the area why not pop along and see the lads. The rest of us can watch it via Arsenal Player if we’re so inclined. I’m not sure if I’m that inclined to be honest, there’s not much you can really glean from pre-season and at this point, after the World Cup, I’m still enjoying the break from football, but if there’s nothing else going on I might watch for a bit.

There’s nothing in the Spanish papers about Khedira so we’re exactly where we were with that one, but I’m sure the manager will be asked today if there are any further arrivals to look forward to.

Odds on his reply.

At the moment, no1/2

We are not close to signing anybody 2/1

If we sign somebody, you will be the first to know4/1

We work very hard but right now the market is a little bit flat10/1

Wry smile which indicates a massive Ozil-esque capture25/1

Que sera, sera. I’m sure there are things going on, and I think we can take heart from the fact we’ve done two deals already which puts us about a bazillion and ninety ahead of last summer. Meanwhile, there’s some good news about Theo Walcott. Asked about his progress yesterday, the boss said:

He’s progressing very well. He’s worked very hard during the summer and we expect him to be back in full training at the end of August.

And when he might be back?

That’s difficult to predict. Once he’s back in full training it can be very quick. He has a good basis, which is what he’s working on now.

I think I had pencilled in the end of September as his earliest comeback date, so it sounds as if we’re well on track for that. Right then, it’s warm, I have things to do like take a giant dog out to catch a yellow frisbee thing, so we’ll leave it there for today.

Have a good one.
