Arsenal News Review is a popular site amongst Arsenal fans. Myles Palmer writes the bulk of the stuff and his ...erm... idiosyncratic style is like car crash reportage. You don't want to look but sometimes you just can't help yourself.
However, he's gone way overboard in his criticism of Emmanuel Adebayor in the last couple of days. In this article he refers to him as a 'clown' and here he slags him off for needing more chances than most to score a goal.
Marc Overmars did not need eight chances to score a goal. Nicholas Anelka did not need eight chances to score a goal. Dennis Bergkamp did not need eight chances to score a goal. Jurgen Klinsmann did not need eight chances to score a goal. Fernando Torres does not need eight chances.
Marc Overmars - season best goal total - 16 (97-98 and 99-00)
Nicolas Anelka - season best goal total (England only) - 19 (98-99, Arsenal)
Dennis Bergkamp - season best goal total - 22 (97-98)
Admittedly Torres has 28 or 29 this season but go find me a Liverpool fan, any Liverpool fan, and they'll tell you he was profligate earlier in the season. Klinsmann had a 29 goal season for Sp*rs back in 1995.
So we can see that Adebayor's 26 goals this season beat Bergkamp's best ever season, Overmars' best ever season by 10 and Nicolas Anelka's best ever season, the man who has had more money spent on him in transfer fees than any other player. Maybe they didn't need as many chances but they never scored more goals.
Palmer then goes on to suggest we buy a Senegalese striker called Mamadou Niang who plays for Marseille, seemingly on the back of a YouTube video. He cites 15 goals in 21 starts. Does nobody remember Sylvain Wiltord scoring nearly 40 goals one season in France. He hardly set the world on fire at Arsenal despite doing a decent enough job.
Anyway, the main point is Adebayor. Arsenal have played three big games in the last 10 days, Adebayor has scored in each of them. Nobody is suggesting he's the world's greatest player but he deserves far better than to be dismissed as a 'clown', especially when the alternatives suggested are some bloke nobody has ever heard of or Nicklas Bendtner who looks decent as a substitute but appears to believe his own hype rather too much.
The big man's goals won us game this season, he's not perfect, but he has improved and the slagging he gets is out of order, in my opinion.
If this article proves anything it's that the clown writes for Arsenal News Review.
Update: Michael from the Gooner Forum provides the following info:
Stats as of March 29th
Adebayor 23 goals in 106 shots (57 SOG) - 1 goal/4.6 shots
Ronaldo 34 goals in 216 shots (109 SOG) - 1 goal/6.4 shots
The fact is that Adebayor puts a higher percentage of his shots on goal than Ronaldo and also scores more goals per attempts than Ronaldo. Ronaldo had only 9 more goals but TWICE AS MANY shots as Adebayor. He's not nearly as wasteful as Ronaldo. He also puts a higher percentage of his shots on goal.
Thanks, Michael.

True, true, true. Ade is young still and if he can improve half as much for next season as he did this season he'll be unstoppable.
The last few months have been utterly disappointing but let's have some perspective; the team has been superb for long stretches of the season and although we haven't won anything the improvement is there for everyone to see.
It certainly is clear that some players aren't up to it, our squad isn't deep enough, and Wenger has made mistakes (most notably all this playing players out of place and such), but next season we have Carlos Vela coming in, Rosicky and Eduardo hopefully returning, and maybe more than the single player Wenger talks about.
This team is young and if we improve as much next season as we did this season, we can win it all!!
here’s a thought,
- overmars wasn’t a striker
- anelka didn’t start as many games as adebayor, not as the lone striker at least
- bergkamp was more of a provider
And I didn't make those comparisons, Myles did.
And surely starting as a lone striker makes it more difficult to score goals.
"CLown" is over the top and unneccessary. Adebayor does remind me a lot of Droga in his first 2 seasons .. sometimes manages the sublime, the rest of the time, he looks like a first division striker. Unfotrunately though we dont have enough behind Adebayor at the moment (or for next year) to challenge United and Chelsea from the beginning to end of the season. I think another strker must be purchased particularly in light of Eduardo's injury, the fact that RVP (despit being a consistent match winner) cant stay fit, and Bendtner not being ready yet.
United have Rooney, Ronaldo, Saha and Tevez (all proven goal scorers) and we have relied on Adebayor up top on his own for most of the season. He has done well but with more options we may have done better towards the important end of the season.
He is a good striker (despite having faults and not being anwhere near the finished article) but needs a partner or competition!
isn't it interesting that anr are amazed that arsenal "dont have a striker" and won't win the league without one, when everyone is queuing up to say how amazing united have played this season without a recognised striker?
yes he has scored 26 times, but one needs to compare it with his season's appearances.
for every goal that he has scored, he has let go a dozen. none of the penalty decisions that we rant about would have mattered, had he been more efficient.
Ade has been the loan striker this year. You all are crazy, his form has dipped exactly when the entire team form has dipped, it's not by chance. Fab has been horrible the past two months along with Helb. The entire team has been bad along with our defense. Get off the kids back, he will only get better next year and the year after.
Ade is not that bad but he certainly is not quality enough to be leading our line. He isn't now and never will be. Sure he's scored 26 goals but think of the amount of goals he's prevented his team from scoring with all those moves that break down when the ball gets to him. Myles in on point.
I think Myles is frustrated and I believed you did too. Maybe your head cooled down faster than most, especially Myles. Yes, Adebayor did score 26 goals. The point is how many chances did he have to score those? If it has been the others mentioned, will they have scored even more? Thing to mention is Adebayor has been getting the best midfield service compared to other teams. With the chances he had, others would have scored 50. Take last night for example, Henry would have scored a hattrick at least.
Does anyone think if we had say Eto and a top quality centre half playing for us yesterday we would have won !!! Yes Ade is a good player and so is Gallas but we need the best Liverpool paid top dollar and got the best striker imagine him in our team we have the money to do it but do we have the will. We are 2 world class players away from being a consitantley good team. Please don't reply Lverpool are below us in the league my point is imagine how many goals Torres would have scored in ur tema and how many draws and losses would have been win's
blogger - I'm in between you and Mylesy boy but to be the top club in Europe, you need a top class striker who will put away the chances at Anfield and Old Trafford where there was just the keeper to beat.
Adebayor is good but not good enough for Arsenal. His first touch is lacking and he does scuff way too often.
However, he could function were the team to have a Pires and Freddie on either flank, rather than that useless fuck Eboue. They were good for 30+ goals per season and this is where we have really been lacking.
Does it matter how many chances he needs if he scores them?
Sure he’s scored 26 goals but think of the amount of goals he’s prevented his team from scoring with all those moves that break down when the ball gets to him
Fucking hilarious, it really is.
We have one striker who has scored 26 goals, we don't have anyone else in the team with over 15 and only 2 others in double figures. If you want to suggest the problem is with our goal scoring it is not with Adebayor but the rest.
The midfield are so tired from carrying the weight of creating so many chances for Adebarndoor.
Comparing him to legends is an insult and it is a lot easier for a lone striker to score for a team that hands so many chances on a plate for him.
He may not be a clown but he has an elephants touch and he even showed us what an elephant he is by making a trunk out of his arm and scoring with his trunk.
Adebayor needs support from a 12 goals per season deft-touched and fast-brained supporting striker - someone in the mould of Merson or Bergkamp. Will Rosicky ever be fit enough to be that man? Possibly not. We also need to see Bendtner challenge for Ade's place a little harder to keep him on his toes. Personally I think that Ade has worked his rocks off more than most this season and I think Arsene should give him an early summer holiday as a reward not a punishment.
"Not good enough for Arsenal"
You lot need to put down the crack pipes. Without him where the fuck would we be in the league this year?
Pray tell who is good enough?
Ade is what we have and what we are going to stick with. You idiots your wives are not good enough, go get another one. Chelskii thinking sons of bitches.
Blogs,
Adebayor's a very good player and seems to be a team man. But for me he is characteristic of the overall lack of ruthlessness of this Arsenal team. Manure, Chelscum and L'pool each have 1 player that wouldn't have missed Adebayor's 1st half chances.
I'm not suggqesting the guy's rubbish and we should sell him. Just that I agree with part of the sentiment of the argument that he doesn't take enough chances.
Wow Joseph, such eloquence. Why is it that when Arsenal fans with a winning mentality question things, morons like you resort to insults to get their points across. Chill out, it's only football, it's just for entertainment, why insult people you've never even met?
True man,Ade has really improved, we need more prolific strikers, why not get Diego from Werder Bremen? i have a fellow Ugandan playing in South Africa's Keizer Chiefs,Dennis Obua.He is a good talent on the left, kind of plays like Robert Pirez. We need more centre and right backs.
I’m not suggqesting the guy’s rubbish and we should sell him. Just that I agree with part of the sentiment of the argument that he doesn’t take enough chances.
No doubt he can improve his finishing, I don't think anyone's arguing that point, but Palmer calling him a 'clown' and some of the idiots here and elsewhere who are slagging off a 26 goal striker give me a fucking pain in my arse.
ade was dreadful yesterday though, his goal was an accident
I think if Eddie hadn't got injured we wouldn't be missing so many chances 10 yards out.
At least Ade gets into scoring positions. Ok, maybe Henry would have put away one of the chances Ade missed yesterday, but Henry would NEVER have scored the goal that Ade scored, a header inside the 6yd box. How many headers has Ade scored this season? Loads. we have been crying out for a 'fox in the box', someone to score the scrappy goals - now we've got one, we're still complaining! I think a lot of Arsenal fans can't get the image of Henry out of their heads.
I cannot believe this crap th\at is being spouted here. Hleb (and maybe Cesc aside), Ade is the best player we have at retaining the ball - saying he gives it away is complete bollox.
If anything, the lone striker role is screwing us up, as he is forced to pull wide to assist in our moves (coz we haven't got a wingers worth talking about). This means there is a vacuum in the opposition penalty box, so Clichy (for example) has no-one to aim for.
In our run at the beginning of the year (during the ACN), Ade scored the goals that kept us in the hunt. If Bendtner had been playing intstead, we would have drawn a lot more and been further behind than we are now, scrapping for 4th place again.
The other thing Myles has said, which I can't believe hasn't been highlighted, is . . .and I quote . ..
"Bendtner is their best striker BY FAR."
In my opinion, Bendtner is a million miles away from Arsenal class and a country mile behind Adebayor. He's the humpty dumpty of Arsenal . .. a big-head who believes his self-generated hype.
So, all you Myles defenders/Ade knockers . .. what do you make of that? Is Bendtner the best striker Arsenal have? Or has the old beatnick finally lost it?
Because you're a cunt Mike? No, no please don't respond; I couldn't take it.
Attacking your managers and players when the team is down is not a thing to be proud of. They have played their heart out all season and gave performances after performance that should be respected.
We will never have the spending power of other big 4 as we have no foreign investments. We know we can have better players and i have to admit we are not the best team in england even in the technical prospect. We play with a style that best fit us. We are small so we have to play extra high tempo and minimize physical challenge. We have to play passing game and we lack of good 1-on-1 player that can create for themselves.
Having said that, you have to respect the manager to not overspend and make profits for the club and getting respectable results and playing with style all in the same time. Our club's shareholders never takes dividend from our profits. All the profits are reinvested in the club future. And only profits will give us good healthy organic growth. Resolving in over-investment will only bring bubble, as you can see in our housing market today.
I feel shameful on those who point fingers, sorry I can't help it.
Think the answer lies somewhere b/w the two extremes (just not really sure which side). Clearly Myles and friends have gone way overboard in their criticisms of the team of late, Ade in particular, and blogger is right to point out he has scored 26 goals this season (also no one was complaining about Ade when he had his purple patch earlier in the season), it's just that even when he's playing well (and scoring) I get this underlying feeling that we could be better with a better finisher (and that seems to come naturally). That said, people forget he's only 23 and clearly still a work in progress. He's a lot better than Drogba was at the same age.

What you have to ask yourself is ade good enough for the arsenal,no me thinks i think myles is bang on!
I dont think anyone is saying that Adebayor has not done well this season.
But if you look back he has missed a hat full of chances. We need to score more goals to remove the pressure in games.
He had a bad game yesterday Adebayor. Yes he gets in the right places but he gets a very good service from the full backs and midfield.
Numerically he has scored a lot of goals, and some have been great, but he has also had lots of tap ins.
I personally dont think he is good enough for Arsenal.
